The Ganydar Foundation is working with the Shoonem Foundation to create a sanctuary for the endangered South Andean deer (huemul or Shoonem in the indigenous language).

The Ganydar Foundation is working with the Shoonem Foundation to create a sanctuary for the endangered South Andean deer (huemul or Shoonem in the indigenous language).

Huemul is also known as shoonem, hence the name of the project.

Objectives

The aim of this project is in line with the mission of the Shoonem Foundation, which this project supports. The Foundation describes its mission as follows

The main mission of this Foundation is to cooperate in the preservation and conservation of natural resources in the Senguer river basin, Chubut, Argentina, by promoting management and scientific research projects applied to nature conservation; promoting Sustainable Development through environmental education and the dissemination of scientific knowledge through multimedia media. The objectives pursued are as follows:

a) Encourage conservation of the threatened Patagonian huemul deer

b) Assisting the village of Alto Rio Senguer in the management of their Shoonem Protected Park

c) Promote scientific, conservation and management activities in the Rio Senguer basin

d) Disseminating scientific knowledge through audiovisual media and publications

e) Participate in training sessions, both formal and informal, aimed at strengthening the relationship between humanity and nature.

Christophe Schaer, visionary philanthropist

Christoph F. Schaer is Ganydar's main contact for this project. He organized the partnership between Ganydar and the funds provided by Erlen Meyer to support this project. He is also advising the Shoonem Foundation on a pro bono basis.

Budget

The Foundation's participation in this project is linked to donations received. In 2024, in addition to major donors, it was supplemented by over CHF 12k in donations following the free publication of a 6-page article in the Swiss German-language magazine 'Schweizer Familie'. The budget is defined annually by the donations collected for this project.
