Description

Project Urdimbre was created in 2017 in Trinidad with the aim of reviving the city's art of lace, embroidery and textile creation.
This project brings together about fifteen artisans, mostly women, who are passionate about needlework. In a workshop, they make clothes, accessories and knitted interior textile articles,
crocheted or embroidered.
Trinidad has an illustrious history in the needle arts. The lingerie items exhibited at the Museo Romántico o Palacio Brunet in the city bear witness to the existence of embroidery, lace, fraying and weaving techniques dating from the 19th century. These techniques have been lost over the generations.
Within the Urdimbre socio-cultural project, lacemakers, embroiderers and other craftsmen are committed to reviving this infinitely precious heritage of arts and crafts. By pooling their know-how, they relearn these techniques and, in order to give them a new future, make articles for sale. Workshops for children and adults are also organized in order to transmit this know-how.

Why this project?

While these wonderful hand embroidered knitwear and garments have required a long and meticulous work to be made, they cannot be sold at a price commensurate with this work as they are often made from poor quality yarns.
To this day, in spite of their unparalleled know-how, these embroiderers, knitters, and lace makers cannot make a living from their craft and must combine several jobs.
The beauty of these works, their fineness and complexity justify that they are made in a beautiful raw material that will ensure a remunerative price to their authors and the desired quality to their buyers.

Objectives

In the first year, the goal is to provide them with quality yarn to make pieces that they can sell at a fair price to round out their month-end. Through the Urdimbre workshop, their creations will be sold directly to consumers. In the medium term, the challenge is to enable these women to make a living from their needlework.
